The modern age is technological, but makes the convincing case that literature is as ever a repository of human values, thereby effectively representing a point of view we have lost: the possibility of values in a technological society.

?From Mark William Roche's Why Literature Matters in the 21st Century

The Institute of English Literature, School of International Studies, Zhejiang University, welcomes a wide variety of scholarly and critical approaches, while remaining firmly convinced that the study of Anglophone literature and literary history are at the center of our collective enterprise. The Institute has great strength in poetry as well as the novel, nonfiction prose and the drama, and its distinguished faculty cover the entire historical range of literature in English. Our work is enhanced by strong connections to a number of other disciplines, including history, art history, political philosophy and theory, and, of course, literature in other languages, as well as the contemporary interdisciplines such as gender studies or cultural studies.
